How do Malaga Airport taxi fares work? Do Malaga taxis have meters?
All Malaga taxis have meters, and each taxi driver also has an official table of fares detailing prices to different destinations in the province. Additionally, at Malaga Airport, there is a sign at the taxi rank which sets out the fares to the most popular destinations. Just make sure the meter is on when you get going! Don’t forget, there is an additional 5.50€ charge for picking up or dropping off at the airport. The minimum fee for a taxi departing from or driving to Malaga Airport is 15-20€. You cannot get a taxi (The cost varies depending on if it’s a weekday, weekend, public holiday, and daytime or nighttime; see the detailed explanation above in the table of fares.)
Where is the taxi rank at Malaga Airport Arrivals?
After you collect your baggage and walk outside through the Arrivals exit, look to the right. You will see all the white taxis lined up right in front of you.
How many people can travel in a Malaga taxi? What about wheelchairs? And child seats?
- The majority of the taxis carry a maximum of 4 people, including children.
- However, there are now some taxis with 5, 7 or 9 seats, but these are not necessarily always waiting in the airport queue.
- There are some adapted taxis that have special ramps for wheelchairs, but these are not always immediately available at the airport.
- Taxis do not have child car seats, these must be booked beforehand.
If you have special taxi travel requirements, we recommend you contact the taxi companies by calling (+34) 952 04 04 04 or (+34) 952 33 33 33. You can then prebook a wheelchair-adapted car or child car seats. If no taxis are available to pre-book, consider a private transfer instead.
Are the taxi queues long?
The taxi queues are pretty organised, but peak season can get very busy and hot. If you don’t want to get hot and bothered or have young kids with you, a private transfer might be a better option. You can book this in advance, and a driver will meet you in the arrivals hall and whisk you straight off to your destination.
Child/Baby Safety in Malaga Taxis
The law in Spain states that registered taxis do not have to carry child seats. Toddlers, babies and small children can sit on the parent’s lap in the backseat with the adult seat belt around both. Older kids have to sit in the back seat with an adult seat belt. From a personal point of view of driving here and knowing what the drivers are like in Malaga, we highly recommend the correct use of child seats and seatbelts. If you are anxious that your toddler sits in a proper seat or has the correct restraint, book a private transfer or arrange for a hire car to ensure that the appropriate seats are available.
Tips on taking Malaga taxis safely and easily:
- Take a photo of the taxi’s registration plate or license number. Many people accidentally leave items in the cab, so at least with a photo you have a chance of getting your property back.
- If you need to call for a taxi from anywhere other than the airport, generally it’s a case of calling the number and telling them where you are. They will say something like “cinco minutos” (5 minutes) and then be there to pick you up. They don’t ask for your destination. There is also an APP.
Uber, Bolt and Cabify ride services
If you want ride-sharing services, you’ll also find Uber, Cabify and Bolt on the Costa del Sol. Are they cheaper than taxis? Not necessarily. However, as a foreigner, it is possibly easier to open an app which already shows your location, rather than trying to explain to the Spanish radio taxi where you are. It’s also good to know the price before you start, rather than have a nasty surprise at the end of your journey. However, at peak periods like summer, around music festivals or fairs, we have found taxis are much better value and much more reliable as during these times the ride-share drivers often reject or cancel your ride if they’re offered a better deal with a client who is requesting a longer journey. So in busy/peak times, a Spanish radio taxi is usually better, cheaper and more reliable.
